How Sewer Service Works

@neweconomynyc

This summer, @New York Focus published a powerful investigation into the ongoing scourge of “sewer service”—the practice of debt collectors fraudulently claiming they served court papers when they didn’t. It echoed what our hotline hears every day: low-income New Yorkers, especially Black and brown communities, are routinely hit with default judgments in cases they never knew existed. In this video, New Economy Project’s Elena Rodriguez explains how sewer service works—and how to fight back. (Bonus: a cameo by our own Tousif Ahsan as a particularly dodgy process server.)

New Yorkers Speak Out: Drew Brown

@neweconomynyc

New Yorkers Speak Out: Drew Brown shares his experience with the cash advance app EarnIn. Cash advance apps target workers, disingenuously promising early access to their wages at little or no cost. In reality, these companies issue loans with high interest rates disguised as “fees” and “tips,” which drain users’ bank accounts and force them to borrow over and over again. This scheme traps people in debt cycles and extracts wealth from working New Yorkers; our recent study found payday loan apps have drained $500 million+ from New Yorkers’ paychecks.
